Abasia medical self help

Abasia or astasia is a condition characterized by the inability of patient to move, bend or walk when not relly due to any disease of the muscles,bones,joints or to nerve paralysist. It occurs in neurotic and hysterical conditions also after great fright,shock,injury or after epileptic attacks.

Either by choice, as in hysteria,or by accident,as in the other conditions mentioned,the patient drops into a state of semiconsciousness or into an autohypnotic state and just refuses to use his will and reasoning power to face reality and make adjustments to it.

If neglected,these conditions may in time cause wating of muscles and stiffness of jointsfrom disuse.Be kindly and sympathetic and convince the patient that his or her condition is not due to an organic disease and that it will improve gradually.Meanwhile,give him massage and daily warm baths, warm sponge baths and rubdowns while the patient is unable to take a tub bath. A good diet and plenty of fresh air are most important.

Galvanic or faradic electrid treatment,which make the patient's muscles twitch and contract involuntarily, helps convince him that the limbs aren't really paralyzed.A tonic like the following is indicated
